« Who Said Road Trips Don’t Require a Locksmith?   5 Things to Remember When Purchasing a Home Security System »

There are many inventions that have proved absolutely fundamental to our safety over the years. One of these is the alarm. It may be something that falls somewhat under the radar, but the invention of the alarm has led to a million variations, all of which play an important function in our lives. Lets just think about a few of the uses that the alarm has in the world today.

First of all, what about the alarm that sits there next to our bed on our bedside table. The function of this little gadget is to make sure that we wake up when we have something that we need to do. If we have an important exam to get up for or need to get up to go to work then we can simply dial in what time we want the thing to start bleeping and go to sleep knowing that we will be woken in time to meet our obligations.

The way that alarm have really come into their own, however, is when it comes to our safety and in warning us of danger. For example, if a fire start in our home when we are fast asleep we will be immediately aroused by the beeping alarm that will enable us to take prompt action.

In much the same way we can sleep more comfortable knowing that should a burglar attempt to steal some of our belongings the burglar alarm will notice his presence and then warn us accordingly, startling the thief at the same time.

Alarms are mainly used to inform people of impending danger. During World War 2, for example, when planes would be seen coming to bomb peoples homes, an alarm would sound nearby alerting people to the threat and giving them the chance to rush down into their bomb shelters.

In hospitals as well, when there is a patient who is critically ill and there is nobody there to supervise them because they are off dealing with other people, an alarm will sound if there is any change in their condition. If their heart rate begins to slow, for example, any nearby doctor will be alerted and they will be able to get there in time to potentially save the day, or at least try.

If we were to just think about the number of lives saved by the use of alarms over the years we would realise how important they have always been.
