Last Friday morning I had an opportunity to listen to the business speech of Dan Gable the legendary coach and Iowa wrestler. He gave a long speech but you could see the interest and enthusiasm of the people present there listening to his speech.

I know a little bit about wrestling, and Gable never had an equal. He won 187 straight matches before being defeated in the final match of his college career. He then went on to win an Olympic Gold Medal in 1972, besting a Rushkee who bragged about defeating him.

Gable went on and became the wrestling head coach of University of Iowa. He brought them to 15 national championships for 21 years. Gable has really no match in terms of coaching and victory record. Not even the honorable John Wooden the basketball coach of the UCLA who won 10 titles in over 30 years of service, not even close. Gable is indeed unbeatable.

I saw him walk in the room about 10 AM. He has had both hips replaced, but he still has the grace of a panther. His eyes are like lasers, and even those who had no idea of what he looked like knew who he was immediately.

Starting his speech he said, “I am here to be a marker in your life.”

It is easy to see why he produced so many champions, and why he could get average guys to reach for the stars again and again. After his talk almost every last person stayed to get a picture or an autograph. One autograph seeker ignited his passion by introducing himself as being from Oklahoma. “That’s unfortunate,” said Gable, “But you can rise above it.”

Gable still gets on the mat today. He said the only difference is that today he selects his opponents, instead of taking all comers.

Not everyone will get to meet Dan Gable, but he can be an inspiration to everyone. Gable has inspired many, not only those who are a part of his team, but even those who have not met him. He has taught many on how to be prepared and strong in facing unpleasant events.
