One of the biggest lies in the martial arts is reaction time. Reaction time traps everybody, but in the martial arts, you can get rid of it. Actually, with the data in this article, you will find it easy to get rid of reaction time.
Reaction time is the gap of time between when something happens and when you respond to it. When that car in front of you, for instance, shows brake lights, it takes three eights of a second for your foot to hit the brake pedal. During this three eights of a second distance can close, bumpers can touch, and collisions can occur, unless, of course, you have reduced, or even eliminated your reaction time.

One of the less spectacular feats in the martial arts, and yet one of the most important, is putting out a candle. Interestingly, it is simple, almost anyone can put out a candle with just a little bit of practice. Also interesting is the fact that as that is where most people stop, with the simple accomplishment being able to do it once, that is where they should begin their study, for doors are about to be opened.

The universe is a dichotomy, when you come right down to brass tacks. The concept of dichotomy is that everything has two side. Down and up, left and right, and so on into the realm of less than concrete ideas.
Within the Martial Arts we find that crux of war versus peace. And, one finds all sorts of other dichotomies in studying the martial arts. Dichotomies which strike right to the soul and heart of the discipline, and even question our very right to exist.

The first time I made time stretch I was woken from a sleep by an uproar of yells and emotion. Looking down from the upstairs window, I saw a couple of fellows trying to beat my dog. I yelled down at them to knock it off, and they yelled something back at me, and the next thing you know I was running down the stairs while pulling on my pants.

There are many stories of the martial arts that are, shall we say, not very honorable. One of the worst I have heard, however, is the one I heard about Kenpo Karate. Unfortunately, I don’t know the truth or falsity of it, but with the data I present in this article perhaps some one could let me know if it is true.
Ed Parker is credited with being the founder of modern Kenpo, teaching movie stars, including Elvis, putting on the biggest tournament in the world for years, the Internationals, and all manner of other deeds. His students are legion, and his prowess is quite well known. Unfortunately, he was only a brown belt when he first began teaching.

I was engaged in teaching a martial arts class, and I had one student whose father liked to go to the bar next door and enjoy himself while his son was getting healthy and strong. After class one day, the father staggered in and pulled out a gun and pointed it at me, and he made the remark that karate isn’t any good if a guy has a gun. I took the pistol from him, held it in my hand, looked at him, and grinned.
