The majority of changes you can make to maintain or increase your home security are often common sense. Many times, it is the littlest things that make the greatest impact on home security. Even then, you can’t be around your home 24/7, so what can you do to decrease the chances of your home being invaded?

On a daily basis, such seemingly trivial duties as ensuring doors and windows are secured when you leave your home, leaving lights on if you are away for the night, or closing blinds are quick and easy ways to fool would-be robbers. Keeping windows and doors cleared of obstructions like bushes, shrubs, and trees, or having a dog can also keep intruders at bay.

But eliminating a burglar’s hiding spots doesn’t necessarily mean you are dissuading them from entering your home. You must still do the little things each day to maintain your home’s security. Locking the doors and windows before you leave, leaving lights on, closing blinds, even having a dog or dogs, can be easy deterrents to criminals looking to enter your home.

Some homeowners are provided with a false sense of security when they have security or alarm systems installed, and unfortunately, often let down their guard due to this. When these alarm systems fail, it is often due to the homeowner’s own negligence. Too many people knowing the security code, posting it on a chalk or dry erase board in a highly visible area within the home, keeping the keypad in a similarly visible area, or just not arming the system when leaving, make a security system all but useless.

However, sometimes the appearance alone of having such a system can be a strong enough deterrent to make criminals avoid your home. By placing signs or stickers in highly visible areas of your home’s exterior (whether you have such a system or not), a burglar may move on to home with no such indicators, feeling the risks more minimal there.

Still, almost any home security precautions are not fool proof, and an intruder could still find his way into a well secured home. Therefore, it is pertinent to be prepared for such a situation and have a plan of action should such an event occur. Having and practicing such emergency drills can increase your safety and that of your family.

In many cases, home security is something you don’t have to spend a bundle to have. Using your brain, often provides better security than any fancy system, steel doors, or iron bars could provide. Moreover, even the best home security system won’t be effective if you don’t use it properly and take regular precautions around your home to ensure safety and efficiency.
