You need to find a company that fits well with the type of home you have, the neighborhood you live in, and the lifestyle that you normally lead. You should asses the reliability and validity of the security company before you even consider signing a contract. Never just choose someplace because you see one of their trucks or a sticker in the window of a nice house.

Start looking for a good home security company right in your neighborhood. Ask your neighbors who they use, if anyone, and check with friends that live nearby. You may be able to include or eliminate options that you may not have considered. Call your local police department and see if they have any suggestions since they sometimes work directly with monitoring companies. Try and find as much information as you can.

These companies may also monitor your home for you and take action in the case of any unusual activity. Be very aware of exactly what you are going to buy.

If possible, you will want to preview the equipment that is going to be installed in your home. The array of different types of boxes and detectors can be confusing. The main device you should examine would be the access panel. The access panel is going to be your link to the system that is installed. Make sure you find the display easy to read and the buttons easy to press. In an emergency, these small details will make a large difference. Also try and take time to make sure the electrical system in your home will be able to support the devices.

Page through the service contract you are given. Take as much time as needed to read and understand each part. For installations and other one-time jobs, make sure there are stated warranties. If a camera system is installed and does not function a week later, it should clearly stated in the contract that they will repair or replace the system at no cost. All of the information about monthly fees or special charges for advanced services should be explicitly listed when reviewing a contract for a monitoring service. A good home security company should have a good contract.

Do not be afraid to complain to your home security company if you are not getting the service you want. If installations are not working properly or the monitoring service does not respond quickly, let the company know. They may be able to fix these problems promptly. If, on the other hand, you do not get the response you want from their customer service, look into moving on to another company. While this may be a hassle with a monitor company, the feeling of security you will get when you trust the company that watches your home will pay for itself.
