In 1852 the American Edward Holmes invented the first electro-mechanical burglar alarm. Prior to this the family watch dog was the usual form of protection from intruders. Holmes’ invention was quite simple. Trip wires were places around windows and doors. When a wire was disturbed a solenoid struck a gong, thus alerting the residents of possible danger. It was well received by the public, and was not improved upon until the next century.
A basic burglar alarm is comprised of 3 separate parts that work in conjunction with each other. There is the main control unit, or the brain of the system, a detection device, and the sounder or siren. Different triggers that a detection device can sense are heat, motion, shock, noise, vibration, and smoke (if the unit also doubles as a smoke detector). Depending on what type of detection device is installed, the trigger will alert the control unit, the data will be quickly analyzed, and then the siren will be sounded, if necessary.
One type of burglar alarm that doesn’t require a professional to install is a wireless burglar alarm. There is a radio transmitter/receiver in each component of the wireless system. This allows the system to communicate with itself via radio waves. This is an easy set-up for the homeowner as no wires are needed, the parts can be placed virtually anywhere, and it is easy to make additions later and maneuver around, if needed.
There are professional companies that offer monitored home security systems. The home is protected 24 hours a day by the agency, and they ensure that the system is always working properly. When a detection device is triggered an alarm sounds and the monitoring agency is notified of the breach. The homeowner can enjoy peace of mind knowing their home is safe while they are away.
Magnetic switches can be used on doors and windows as a burglar alarm. They are very easy to install and maintain. In the simplest terms, there is a magnet and a switch that are lined up on the door or window. When the connection is broken between the two, i.e. the door is opened, then the alarm goes off. The draw-back to this is when the window or door is then closed, the alarm will usually stop.
There are many reasons to have a burglar alarm, and the wealthy and business owners are no longer the only ones able to afford the alarms. Burglars are not always after money and valuables. These systems also protect your loved ones. They have also become very affordable, and offer different benefits, depending on the needs of the homeowner.
It is very important to choose the right burglar alarm. The money you have available to spend on an alarm, if you are able to install it yourself or need a professional to do the job, and why you need the alarm system are all key points to consider before you make a purchase. To ensure that you are completely satisfied with your choice, do some research and educate yourself on the alarms available.
