What is more effective than mace or tear gas? That’s, right, pepper spray. If you are curious how this can offer you personal protection, read on.

You have heard of pepper spray, right? It is simply the best form of protection that is non-lethal to the offender. When used, it will temporarily blind the attacker for sometimes up to an hour. This gives you a chance to get out of danger, and it works against most animals as well. It is widely available from specialized stores and online.

The potency of this protective aerosol comes from the chemical known as Oleoresin Capsicum. It is derived directly from cayenne peppers. When it comes in contact with a membrane, the capillaries will dilate and cause problems like loss of vision, pain, and trouble breathing. It burns when it touches the skin. However, the effects are short lived and offer no long-term damage.

Do you know how to use it? First of all, make sure there is enough distance between yourself and the threat that you will not be struck. Aim for the face, the eyes in particular. Release a couple second long jet and back away. Just always remember to spray and then move. In a few seconds you will know whether it is needed to do it again, judging by their reaction. Get away and call the police.

Amazingly, this is effective on animals as well. Both domestic and wild critters are susceptible. It will burn them the same way as a human. It is a great way to discourage or end an attack. This can actually quite literally save your life if you spend a lot of time outdoors where bears or big cats are known to roam. Mail carriers actually carry this in case of trouble with an aggressive dog.

Do your absolute best to never be on the wrong end of OC. The pain is unbearable and can last up to two hours. Here is what can help if you are sprayed. First, immediately flush your eyes as well as you can. You can use baking soda past, milk, or honey to remove some of the sting from your face and hands. Washing your hands in alcohol can be beneficial as well. However, the only thing to really do is wait and let it leave your body in time.

Here are a few more things you need to know about OC. First of all, it is not legal in every state and certain restrictions do apply. Make sure you check locally before you carry it. Never have this on your person in an airport or plane unless you want to be charged with a federal crime. It also expires and loses potency. To always be sure of the best results when you need them, buy a new canister every three or four years.

Pepper spray is very effective in delivering a strong punch. It is a wonderful deterrent for both humans and animals. If you want a great means of non-lethal protection, look no further.
